Tiny Pink Orphan Had Her Eyes Fused Shut And Looked Like A Premature Human Baby

Lindy is an animal welfare worker who frequently works on rehabilitating animals rescued by ACT Wildlife, a wildlife rescue service based in Canberra, Australia. A couple of months ago, Lindy heard about a dying “pink bald creature” under the care of ACT staff. She immediately knew she had to help the poor thing writes ilovemydogsomuch
ACT workers were alerted about a dead wombat lying on the roadside after a hit and run. When they went to look into the situation, they were horrified to discover a tiny baby wombat clinging on to the pouch of her dead mama. They named the baby wombat Sylvie and brought her to the rescue, but her survival seemed very unlikely.
Lindy often gets called the “crazy wombat lady” due to her devotion to protecting these marsupials. She has been raising injured and at-risk wombats for the past decade, so the ACT knew she was Sylvie’s only hope. While Lindy quickly took Sylvie under her care, she had no idea if the motherless baby would actually make it.
Wombat babies grow in their mother’s pouch for 8-9 months. Sylvie was just 4 months old and weighed around 13 ounces. She was a pink blob who was yet to open her eyes, which look like they’re fused shut during the baby stage. Her tender skin and underdeveloped body made her fragile and she looked like a premature human baby. To make matters worse, she had a gut infection that depleted her vitality.
Lindy’s emergency measures were to keep Sylvie hydrated and recreate the warmth that she would have gotten in her mama’s pouch to thrive in. However, Sylvie’s infections made it difficult for her to keep fluids down and pushed her to the brink of death. Lindy was scared and anxious, but she did not give up on the poor orphan.
