Miniature Dog Born Without Front Legs Hangs Head In Sadness As Teacher Walks By
Some dogs wind up with the right people at the right time, and Paige Bradford is living proof of that. Bradford has been employed in Alexandria, Virginia as an elementary school teacher for many years, writes ilovemydogsomuch
She advocates for the disability rights movement, so when she heard about a dog with some physical limitations, she knew it was time to step up. The dog, a miniature Australian Shepherd, was being overlooked due to one particular shortcoming in his physical appearance.
Tobi was born without front legs, so the five-year-old, two-legged dog would need the right owner to guide him along in life. “I saw a news article about Tobi on Facebook, and they said that he would be put up for adoption after he adjusted to his cart,” Bradford shared. “I followed him for a few months and reached out to The Humane Society of North Texas, asking about the adoption process for an out-of-state adoption.” The pooch is also missing two ribs, which has led to organ compression. Along with degenerative disk disease from walking on his back legs, Bradford knew she had to work with the sweet pup.
Bradford knew Tobi would be the perfect companion to help teach her students both pre-and post-pandemic. She realized the kids had no idea they were playing with the dog, but they were doing classroom activities in reality. “For example, one of my students had hemiparesis and had limited use of his right side,” she said. “So, I brought him treats, and he had to use both hands to open the bag of treats and then use his right hand to pull out a treat and hand it to the dog. It was fun for Tobi and for my student.”
In another case, Bradford taught one of her students the alphabet with Tobi as a reward. She learned the letter T, Bradford recalled, because she would call for Tobi whenever she found “T” in the lesson. She loves that her students are learning acceptance and look to Tobi as a cute dog and not feeling sorry for him. Congratulations on being the teacher’s pet and a canine hero, Tobi!
