Dog Reunited with Owner Slowly Recognizes Him After more then 10 years in Shelter

In San Antonio, Texas, David Calderon and his Labrador retriever Samson have been reunited. Thanks to Animal Care Services in San Antonio who reconnected the two; Samson went missing more than ten years ago.

According to the shelter’s Facebook page, Samson had been three years old when he disappeared. At the time, his dog had a habit of escaping from his fenced in yard, but had always been easy to find and bring home. When the dog disappeared almost 11 years ago, Calderon suspects someone had stolen him.

Of course, the family looked all over for their beloved dog, notified all of the shelters in the area and hoped that Samson’s microchip would help to reunite him with his family. Years passed, but David never forgot his dog.

On June 15, Calderon received a call from the shelter, and it concerned the dog his owner never gave up hope finding:

“We brought Samson into our care last month along with six other abandoned dogs he had been with. He was in pretty rough shape, dirty and covered in fleas. Before he was able to get treatment, he was scanned for a microchip – and we found one! Mr. C was shocked to hear that Samson had been found, and rushed over to ACS,” the shelter wrote on their Facebook page.

And then came the long awaited reunion when Calderon arrived, spotted his sweet dog, knelt down and quietly addressed his dog – nearly in tears.

“Samson, it’s me. Do you remember me? They took the better years from us.”

Of course, there is some sadness with this story – so many years Calderon and Samson have been separated. When found, Samson was full of fleas and weighed only 56 pounds compared to the 96 pounds he weighed when he disappeared.

Samson has been back with his family now, has regained some weight and is starting to become familiar again with the wonderful life he once had. No one knows where the dog has been all these years, but the importance of having your dog micro chipped is so important.

Maybe Samson is an old dog now and maybe he’s a lot slower and has a bit of arthritis, but he’s home and loved, and we are all so grateful to know these two have been reunited.
